Is Coronavirus the new ‘X’ factor of technologies?
We are living in an unprecedented global health crisis, and no country in the world is an exception. During this pandemic, it is vital to stop the spread of the virus by limiting travel and gatherings which represent an obvious risk of spread. While many countries, like France are in confinement for an indefinite period, but what about the aftermath?
The Impacts
- The first, that are going to be impacted are unfortunately humans than the economies. This is seen during the first round of municipal elections in France, that many people did not vote due to the fears of virus spreading, thereby limiting the potential of democracy.
- The constraints necessary to prevent the spread of Coronavirus come through measures limiting physical contact between humans. Exchanges and remote transactions (purchases, teleworking, conferences, etc.) were first advised and are now imposed. Several million employees are now working from home. Many more consumers are turning to online shopping orders.
- This situation is unprecedented and many companies are not at all structured for working from home and to even make it more complicated, the internet and telephone communication networks are saturated than ever before.
- In the context of the elections for example in France, no measures were taken to vote at a distance. This resulted in record not voting in the first round to 55%, and the cancellation of the second round blocked the democratic process.
Is Blockchain the solution for the Pandemic?
Solutions exist to relieve networks and allow democratic continuity. The most effective is the use of blockchain to manage exchanges and transactions remotely in real time.
However, this blockchain must be able to manage all transactions from a country or even from the entire planet in a few seconds, and that the identity of users must be proven to be unfalsifiable without exposing it to the risk of fraud, or diversions.
Today, many things can be performed online, such as passport renewal, paying bills, many more. However, voting is a very special case. There must be a certainty that it is you and no one else voted on your behalf and mainly that this choice is not made under any constraints.
Blockchain can definitely ensure democratic continuity and allow voters to vote from anywhere on the planet without the risk of identity theft provided it is paired with a tamper proof biometric technology and has internet access.
